According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) temperatures will drop significantly overnight with a top of 27 forecast for Wednesday.
The BOM said that a high pressure system over the Tasman Sea had extended a ridge to the northern New South Wales coast, while a low pressure trough moved across the southwest. Between these systems, hot air from central Australia was being drawn across NSW, leading to heatwave conditions in many districts.
The trough will move through most southern and central areas on Tuesday before weakening over the northeast on Tuesday night. This is forecast to bring gradual respite from the heat as the week progresses, although the northern inland is likely to remain very warm.
The change will set the pace for the remainder of this week with showers and a top of 23 forecast for Thursday and Friday, possible showers and a top of 28 on Saturday and partly cloudy and a top of 30 degrees on Sunday and Monday.
