Figs are making their way to tomorrow's Slow Food Earth Market in The Levee, along with a wide range of fresh produce grown around Maitland.
Decent rainfall has left produce jumping out of the ground and put producers in a good position. It's a far cry from the challenges they were facing 12 months ago. Back then they were still looking to the sky for drought-breaking rain.
The favourable conditions is good news for Felicia Nguyen, a backyard grower at Aberglasslyn, who this time last year was struggling to keep the water up to all of her crops.
She'll be bringing Snake bean, Banana flower, Bottle gourd, Bitter melon, Malabar spinach, Amaranth, Elephant ear, Sweet potato leaf, Garlic chive, Sorrel and Thai basil to the market.
The Little Tin Shed at Medowie will be bringing figs along with a limes, tomatoes and pumpkins.
If bio-dynamic Black Genoa figs are more your style, check out the Verdant Produce Stall. Sophie and Louise Nichols grow the figs on a 100 acre property in Belford along with other vegetable and fruit crops. They also have beef cattle.
"This market we've got small quantities of pears, figs, plums and apples," Slow Food Earth Market Maitland chairwoman Amorelle Dempster said.
"Because of the rain we've got good summer crops. Those things that we may not get normally like salad greens and lettuces and tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants are available and we're getting a good selection. It's normally too hot and they all cook on the vine.
"Being the first market everyone is gearing up to come back after the break. At this market there is a good range but as we go on we are looking forward to introducing a lamb producer from Dungog and a few other producers."
