The Rutherford-based Hunter RSPCA shelter is set to receive a $1.17 million upgrade thanks to a much needed capital injection from the State Government.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the funding boost will improve facilities and conditions for animals, staff and volunteers.
"RSPCA NSW plays a vital role in promoting responsible pet ownership and strengthening animal welfare standards across the State," Mr Martin said.
"In fact, the much-loved organisation's nine shelters throughout NSW care for more than 29,000 injured, neglected, sick, surrendered and unwanted animals each year.
"This funding boost will help RSCPA NSW address key infrastructure requirements in the Hunter to meet animal welfare and community standards now and into the future."
Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock said the funding for the Hunter shelter was part of a commitment of $10.5 million for upgrades to shelters around the State.
"Everyone knows the RSPCA does a great job caring for thousands of animals every year, which is why I am so proud that this funding will ensure the organisation can renew and expand their facilities around the State," Mrs Hancock said.
"The enhanced facilities will no doubt help the RSPCA carry out its important work, particularly its invaluable pet adoption services, community assistance programs and animal rescue services."
Works include upgrades to the veterinary hospital and animal shelters, landscaping and construction of a vehicle shed.
"For RSPCA NSW the upgrades will help us to help every animal that comes through our doors for decades to come," RSPCA CEO Steve Coleman said.
"Our facilities not only provide shelter and vet treatment for animals, they will help us to continue to support, educate and help communities across NSW in responsible pet ownership and animal welfare."
