Local small business woman and Rutherford resident Stephanie Fisher, 31, has been selected to replace long-time West Ward Labor Councillor Henry Meskauskas who announced his retirement in April.
Labor councillors Robert Aitchison in North Ward and Ben Whiting in East Ward will recontest their positions, as will Mayor Loretta Baker, who is once again running for mayor and Central Ward councillor.
"Over the past four years, and during the pandemic, Maitland City Council has provided strong and stable leadership," Mayor Baker said.
"Under my leadership, we've seen record investments in local roads. We've built dozens of new parks and sporting facilities.
"We've seen kilometres of new footpaths and cycle-ways built. We've opened new community centres. We've expanded our local services, and we've supported our local residents and businesses during the pandemic," she said.
"Of course, there's much more to do, especially on our local road network. But our track record over the past four years shows that we are getting on with the job of fixing local infrastructure and building new community assets."
Labor's candidate for West Ward, Stephanie Fisher, said she was proud to receive Labor's endorsement and was looking forward to fighting for West Ward families.
"I grew up in Maitland, my husband and I live in Rutherford, and like so many young families, we've loved building our life together right here in the west.
"After 32 years on council, Henry has certainly left big shoes to fill. But I'm putting myself forward to make sure our community has a strong voice on council," said Ms Fisher.
Like Cr Meskauskas, Ms Fisher has a long history in competitive swimming. Both were national swimming champions and both represented Australia in world championships.
East Ward Councillor Ben Whiting said the last few years have been tumultuous for the community. "But Loretta's Labor team has delivered strong and stable leadership throughout.
"We've built and opened more community assets than any previous council, and we responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with a $2.5 million support package for local residents and businesses."
North Ward Councillor Robert Aitchison is asking for the community's support so the team can continue its investment in local roads and community infrastructure.
"There's always more to do, but this council has spent more money fixing local roads than any council before it.
"We've expanded local services, we've opened new facilities, and I think we're heading in the right direction.
"We haven't been deterred by personal politics. We've just gotten on with the job and I think the community can see that," Cr Aitchison said.
