Varley was Maitland president from 1985-90 stepping into the top job mid-season after the sudden death of Dave Moreland.
Varley began his service on the Pickers committee in 1981 after more than a decade in administration at the Western Suburbs Schoolboys, where he was president from 1973-78, and the Maitland District Schoolboys Rugby League Association.
He was awarded life membership of both the Maitland Pickers and the Western Suburbs Schoolboys.
Varley's son Mark, also a Pickers life member, said his father loved the game of rugby league and the Pickers and kept an interest in results until the end.
Current Pickers president Frank Lawler said Varley would be sadly missed and the club extended its sympathies to the entire family.
The club will wear black armbands at their next home game against Lakes United on Saturday, July 10.
Married for 60 years, Varley is survived by his wife Barbara. They had four children Kathryn, Mark, Phillip and Tim (deceased).
His funeral is at Maitland Uniting Church, 347 Ken Tubman Drive, on Friday at 10am.
