POLICE believe a man killed near Taree may have been struck by a vehicle that failed to stop at the site of the tragedy.

Investigators are examining the circumstances that led emergency services to Wingham Road, near Cedar Party Road, about 7pm on Sunday after reports of a concern for welfare.
Officers found a man, believed to be in his 50s, unconscious and suffering serious injuries.
Paramedics treated the man before he was taken to Manning Base Hospital in a serious condition.
Police confirmed he later died as a result of his injuries.

Detectives have established a crime scene and specialist Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit officers are looking into how the man was injured.
NSW Police said in a statement that their initial inquiries had been "suggesting he may have been hit by a vehicle that failed to stop and render assistance".
