Council Events Officer Beth Anastasiou said the decision was made in alignment with COVID-19 restrictions.
"Sadly, we are not able to go ahead as we wanted to this year ... We are going to continue to follow NSW Health advice and keep the community and stakeholders updated," she said.
"Riverlights brings together a large number of community groups from a wide range of cultures to celebrate and embrace multiculturalism and diversity.
"It's such a beautiful and warm event and we can't wait to bring Riverlights to Maitland as soon as it is safe to do so"
Riverlights was scheduled to be held on October 9.
