The show, which is the theatre's first production after lockdown, opens on Wednesday, November 24 and will run nine performances.

The play is a satire on the hypocrisies of the repressive Victorian era, highlighting the shallow, class obsessed nature of society.

The show is known for exposing and reversing gender stereotypes and having empowered female characters.

Directors Nick Thoroughgood and Rylee O'Rourke have reinvented Wilde's play by setting it in the 1980's, and played with gender roles through casting of the leads.

A spokesperson for the Repertory Theatre said Maitland deserves a good laugh.

"After the year we've had we all need some comedy, and this classic is just what the doctor ordered," the spokesperson said.

The Repertory Theatre will celebrate 75 years of operation in 2022.

Audiences attending opening night on Wednesday, November 24 will receive complimentary refreshments from 7.30pm.
