As a state championship event and qualifier for the World Age Group championships, organisers wanted to give participants from Queensland, Victoria and South Australia the best chance of competing, considering state restrictions.
Event organiser, Paul Humphreys, said the previous date (November 7) was a bit too close for what 'might' be a point community sport events could go ahead.
Also in the news:
Held in Morpeth, there will be three events on the day including:
- Long distance with a 2000 metre swim, 60 kilometre cycle and a 15 kilometre run
- Olympic distance with a 1500 metre swim, 40 kilometre cycle and 10 kilometre run
- Sprint distance with a 750 metre swim, 20 kilometre cycle and five kilometre run.
The swim leg will take place in the Hunter River, the 20 kilometre looped cycle course goes through the town of Morpeth and into the farmland, and the two and a half kilometre looped run will show off Morpeth's country status with cows very likely to be on the course.
The first race will begin at 6.45am at Queens Wharf Park near the Morpeth boat ramp.
Sponsored by Quarry Mining, this will be the 23rd annual Maitland Triathlon and organisers are looking to make it the best yet.
There is $5500 in prize money up for grabs, which is set to bring in a whole host of pro, elite and amateur triathletes.
The event is expected to sell out with COVID-19 restrictions likely impacting the number of participants allowed at the event.
Entry fees vary, see www.maitlandtriathlon.com.au for details.
Some changed traffic conditions will be in place in Morpeth on the day from 5.30am to 1.30pm.
