A five-wicket haul by Oscar Walker and unbeaten 58 by Tom Thorpe steered Maitland Gold to a seven-wicket win against Coalifields in the Central North Zone Under-17 Col Dent Shield clash at Cook Park in Singleton on Sunday.

It was a successful day for Maitland in the Col Dent Shield with Maitland Maroon recording a hard-fought 11-run win against Tamworth at Robins Oval thanks in no small part to 85 by Callan Barber coming in at No.7
Maitland Gold's bowlers dismissing Coalfields for 114, with Walker finishing with 5-26 from 8.1 overs, left-arm pace bowler Isaac Coyle taking 3-7 off seven and Thorpe picking up 2-7 off his five.
Thorpe backed up with his unbeaten 58 and Jaxon Brooks made 20 before being run-out as Maitland Gold made 3/120, reaching their target in the 24th over.
The win lifted Gold to second equal on 15 points with Coalfields, behind the unbeaten Maitland Maroon on the top of the table with 25 points.
Maroon was pushed on Sunday and only Barber's innings of 85 enabled them to post a respectable target of 189 before they were dismissed in the final over of their 50 over game. Dylan Maxted made 20 and Joe Hancock 16.
Maitland's bowlers took regular wickets and were able to dismiss Tamworth for 178 in the penultimate over. Rywin Nock (2-16 off 10 overs), Fletcher Cousins (2-16 off four) and Barber (2-41 off nine) all picked up two wickets.
Games in the Under-17 Col Dent Shield shift to Tamworth on Sunday for the penultimate round and final round before Christmas.
Maitland Maroon play Narrabri, Maitland Gold face Tamworth and Coalfields take on Inverell.
The Under-13 George Denton Shield and Under-15 John Killborn Shield CNZ competitions resume on January 30, 2022.
