You won't be travelling to London or New York anytime soon, so treat yourself and do both in one trip to the theatre.
For lovers of books and for letter writers - this play's for you.
The power of the pen shines in this poignant biographical journey of an aspiring New York City based writer and the head clerk of an antiquarian bookshop in London.
A simple book order develops into a long-lasting, long-distance friendship which endured for twenty years.
Director Jo Cooper, a regular on stage at Maitland Rep, has loved 84 Charing Cross Road since she read it in high school.
By the time Jo had read Helen Hanff's other books the author felt like an old friend, and this play, about connecting over distance seems very apt for this time.
Jo has brought together an excellent cast - Aimée Cavanagh (Helene), Stewart McGowan (Frank), Jack Madden (Bill Humphries), Ann-Maree Day (Maxine Stuart), Bronte Fegan (Cecily Farr), Sam Rogers (Megan Wells), Robert Comber (George Martin), and Imogen Cooper (Imogen Thomas).
The play runs for seven performances from January 7 to 15, including two matinees on Sunday 9 and Saturday 15 January.
Then 84 Charing Cross Road will move to Newcastle Theatre Company for another five performances from 19 to 22 January.
The opening night audience on Friday, January 7 will be treated to complimentary refreshments before the show from 7:30pm.
Tickets are $25/$20 and you can book at www.mrt.org.au or on 0466 332 766 (10 -2 daily). 2022 Season Tickets are on sale now for $80.
