The Rutherford oval is highly utilised by local primary and high schools, and the Rutherford Little Athletics Club.
It is also the only ground that can host AFL matches in the Maitland Local Government Area and is home to the Maitland Saints AFL Club.
The upgrade will involve knocking down the existing clubhouse and the construction of a new grandstand, team social room, timekeeping room, change room facilities, canteen, toilets and storage facilities.
The oval underwent an upgrade in 2019, bringing it up to AFL national standards.

Federal Liberal candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell said she was delighted to welcome $3 million in funding after her advocacy for upgrades to the Weblands Street facility.
"I am thrilled to have fought for and delivered on this funding for the benefit of the entire Rutherford community," Ms Vitnell said.
"Community sport is often the glue that binds the community together.
"The fact that this is oval is regularly used by the Rutherford Technology High School and the Rutherford Primary School cements the importance of this investment for the entire community.
"I am also pleased of the number of females participating in sport right here in Rutherford.
"By updating these facilities we ensure they have their own change rooms and toilets."
Ms Vitnell hoped the upgrade would also encourage more women to participate.
Incumbent Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said the federal Labor Party has also pledged $3 million for the oval should it win next month's election.
"I welcome any commitment to local sporting facilities and am pleased the government is finally committing to the long-overdue upgrade at Max McMahon Oval," she said.
"A Labor government will work with Maitland City Council to ensure it has the funding necessary to continue to upgrade sporting facilities across the region."
