The council’s existing strategy was adopted in 2009 and the revised strategy contains a number of changes relating to engagement channels and the role the community plays in the council’s decision
making.
Executive manager for corporate planning and engagement Leah Flint said the revision of the strategy reinforced the council’s commitment to making community engagement part of core business practices and the recognition of the vital role consultation played in planning for the city.
“Councillors and staff are keen to make sure that contemporary models of engagement are explored and used alongside traditional styles of consultation,” she said.
Ms Flint said the community engagement website – maitlandyoursay.com.au – would be one of the main platforms for engagement and feedback.
“Maitland Your Say provides an online platform for the community to discuss and leave feedback on a variety of council issues including strategic and corporate planning, policy development and implementation, significant projects and notification of legislation requirements,” Ms Flint said.
The aims of the strategy are to:
* Establish a framework to ensure meaningful, informed and genuine community participation is active in council’s decision making
* Establish an environment in which council and the community can exchange views, ideas and information
* Provide a consistent approach across council and ensure that all consultation processes and community engagement activities are focused and effective
* Strengthen partnerships between the council, community, local organisations, government stakeholders and service providers
* Be proactive and open to new and innovative ways to consult and maintain ongoing engagement with the whole of the community.
