One hundred children from Nillo Infants School, Lorn and Maitland Community Pre-School sat in awe then cheered with delight as The Wrong Book was read to them.
Councillor Robert Aitchison donned a top hat to be their reader for the morning and he warned the enthusiastic listeners to be on the look out for monsters, a pirate, a queen and a horde of curious rats, not to mention an elephant who continually interrupted the story.
The Wrong Book is written and illustrated by Australian author Nick Bland.
In the book, Nicholas Ickle is trying to introduce a book but before he can begin the pages are invaded by other characters.
“This event promotes the value and fun of reading and engages children in stories,” Maitland City Librarian Keryl Collard said.
“It has been held nationally for 13 years and Maitland library has been involved every year.”
Maitland children were among 380,000 children in more than 2000 libraries around Australia celebrating National Simultaneous Storytime.
The annual campaign encourages young people to read and enjoy books.
Storytime also took place at East Maitland, Rutherford and Thornton libraries.
