The school’s rock music program involves 24 children with six students forming the Barclay Rock Ensemble.
Through sponsorship from Barclay Property Group, the school has been able to buy instruments including electric guitars, drums, saxophones, trumpets and clarinets.
The money has been used to pay for tutoring the young musicians.
The rock ensemble played one of their first shows on Friday in front of more than 400 people at the school’s Father’s Day breakfast and principal John Millburn was thrilled with the response.
“The kids were absolutely fantastic,” he said.
“They played two songs, Hall of Fame and a Bruno Mars number.
“We’ve had a lot of positive feedback and comments already and we’re very pleased for the kids.”
Mr Millburn said he hoped the fledgling program would produce a host of musicians that would build a musical legacy at the school.
“I’m very interested to see where the program leads,” he said.
“Eventually we want the students who are in the rock program to graduate to the rock ensemble.
“But we only had the opportunity to do this through the support of local business and these kinds of programs really benefit children.”
The rock ensemble has more gigs booked for the end of the year, with performances at the Spring Fair and Carols Night already in the diary.
