Following on from a tradition started by the Christian Church almost 2000 years ago, the Sunday night service – at St Peter’s Anglican Church, East Maitland – will provide an opportunity to pray for loved ones.
“We do not shy away from death, the church stands as a symbol of hope in the midst of reality that we will all one day die,” parish priest Father David Battrick said.
“St Peter’s Church has been a special place for those who live in the region for over 100 years.
“Many people have visited the church to celebrate baptisms and weddings, and also to attend funeral
services. We look forward to welcoming people from across the region as we remember with them those who have died.”
Members of the community were invited to provide a list of names in preparation for the service. As a result, more than 1000 people will be named during the service and hundreds are expected to attend the event.
“We will also remember in our prayers the former bishops of Newcastle, priests who have served here in East Maitland and all those who have died and who we have been asked to name by their relatives and friends,” Father David said.
The service will start at 6pm.
St Peter’s also holds a regular bereavement group. Phone 4934 5303 for more information.
