There are still obstacles but no greens. There are still holes and flags but on a larger scale.
And courses are still designed to test participants but without using a club or ball.
Welcome to disc golf, and this weekend the sport will make its maiden appearance in the city of Maitland.
The Newcastle Disc Golf Club, at Jesmond, will take over Stockade Hill at East Maitland on Sunday as members attend to spread the sport across the Hunter Valley.
The club recently expanded to Lake Macquarie and November 3 will make their first venture into Maitland, home of event organiser Luke Turnbull.
“We are looking to grow the sport and this is one way of doing it,” Turnbull said.
“We are hoping to get 20 or 25 people along to enjoy the day.”
Turnbull took up the sport a few years back following a spate of injuries and has become hooked ever since.
He said the discs, sized bigger than a CD but smaller than a record, vary in thickness and can be thrown anywhere up to 150 metres.
NSW Open champion and founding Newcastle Disc Golf Club member Neil Roberts will be part of the action on Sunday.
Play will be held between 8am and 5pm.
