But Mr Nichols isn’t too concerned – he’s had much bigger fish to fry.
Following a shock cancer diagnosis at age 14, the young Maitland man has been forced to balance treatment and school work. However, this week spells the end of a long and arduous road.
“I went and had a check-up the other day and my doctor is hopeful that I’ve beaten the cancer for good so I’m pretty happy about that,” Mr Nichols, 18, said.
“So I guess I look at the HSC results a little differently now, they are definitely not the end of the world. There is so much in this life you can do.”
Mr Nichols is one of the hundreds of Maitland HSC students expected to receive their final marks on Wednesday.
“I did get some special considerations because I have some long-term issues from the treatment but other than that I just did what everyone else did,” he said.
Mr Nichols has also recently auditioned for the University of Newcastle’s Conservatorium of Music.
“I haven’t had much of a rest because I had to learn three pieces for the audition but I’m definitely going to have a break now.”
