A 20-year-old man died in the single-vehicle crash on Broke Road, Pokolbin, at 11.55pm.
Central Hunter police duty officer Inspector Brian Tracey said two of the man’s friends were travelling in the car behind when they saw his vehicle swerve left and right before it left the road and hit a tree.
The friends tried to help the driver but he was trapped in the car.
Inspector Tracey said the man was deceased when emergency crews arrived at the scene.
He said the man was on his way home from work at a nearby restaurant at the time of the crash.
Police believe speed was a factor in the incident.
“We are urging young drivers slow down when driving on the region’s roads, especially the back roads,” Inspector Tracey said.
“Again it’s another senseless waste of a young life.”
