NSW opposition spokesman for education Ryan Park has joined Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery and Cessnock MP Clayton Barr in calling on Education Minister Adrian Piccoli to do all he can to save the school from closure.
Their plea also includes the case of Wollombi Public School.
“Martins Creek Public School and Wollombi Public School both provide quality education services to the rural communities of the Hunter, and Adrian Piccoli needs to come and speak with the community before he shuts the gate,” Mr Park said.
“Schools are more than just bricks and mortar, they are a part of the community – and it’s time the Minister showed the people of the Hunter he understands that.”
Ms Hornery said it was deplorable that the government had sought to close the schools, which would leave students, teachers and parents stranded.
And Mr Barr said it was time the government put transparency and consultation ahead of a dollar-driven cash grab.
Submissions on options for the school are open until April 11.
