Maitland City Council has released its draft plan of management and master plan for Maitland Park, which will be debated at this week’s council meeting.
The plan of management and master plan were compiled to make sure council had a co-ordinated approach to enhance the park.
While many of the projects included have already been publicly announced, the master plan gathers them into one document to create a single picture of Maitland Park for the next 20 years.
Staged construction of a $7 million indoor aquatic centre, 654 new car parking spaces and a multi-purpose amenities building for sporting teams are among the projects included in the plan.
A million dollar netball amenities building, upgrades to hockey and croquet facilities, extra picnic areas and outdoor fitness stations were also included in the document.
Council’s community and recreation services manager Lyn Morton said the master plan earmarked some projects for the near future and others that would be long-term goals.
Ms Morton said the documents would ensure that future development of the park was thought through.
“It’s a good way to ensure that planning is not ad hoc,” she said.
“It sets the direction and framework and it sets the big picture.”
Mayor of Maitland, Cr Peter Blackmore said the plan included improvements that would benefit all sports organisations and people of all ages.
Cr Blackmore said new amenities for sporting teams and the indoor aquatic centre were among the most sought after additions to the park.
“We’ve only got one chance to get it right and the plan of management allows people to have an input and it allows councils to provide the necessary funding,” he said.
