The long-standing interest in promoting better farming in the area dates from 1822, when the Agricultural Society of NSW made special provision for representation to be given to the Hunter Region.
The showground is historically significant as a centre for the celebration of rural life since 1873.
It is a microcosm of local history which is reflected in the shows, the buildings and the use of the grounds, particularly the Salon of Photography since 1935, the Bushman’s Campdraft Association since 1946, and early motorcycle speedway racing in 1923.
Maitland Showground is aesthetically significant as a suite of functional buildings dating back to late 19th century.
Of special note are the Arts and Crafts Pavilion, the Grandstand with the McDonald Pavilion and the Poultry Pavilion.
