The Labor stalwart has taken a positive step to improve the plight of internet users struggling with slow download speeds across the Maitland area.
After a recent spat with Paterson Liberal MP Bob Baldwin over who is responsible for the slow rollout of the National Broadband Network, Mr Fitzgibbon has taken the positive step of organising an online petition to take to Telstra CEO David Thodey.
In short, he wants internet users to log the areas where there are problems and he will appeal to get more ADSL ports installed across the Hunter.
Well done Mr Fitzgibbon.
Stop the average punter in the streets and they will tell you their biggest bugbear is not the 7.25 per cent increase in council rates or the consistently poor performances of the Newcastle Knights – it’s getting access to fast and reliable broadband.
In this day and age where people want – and demand – fast access to online sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, it is becoming increasingly frustrating as our telecommunications network lets us down.
Telstra has been unwilling to rollout more ADSL ports, which would become redundant when the NBN is finally rolled out.
But with a five-year wait for the NBN in some areas, residents are calling for improved services in the interim.
Ashtonfield, Thornton and Maitland are some of the key areas where there are reportedly problems with internet access and Mr Fitzgibbon is keen to identify all the areas where improvement is needed.
