The man, believed to have been armed with a pistol, stole a strong box containing an unspecified amount of cash from the vehicle, which was making a delivery to the Commonwealth Bank at Stockland Green Hills about 2.15pm on Tuesday.
Detective Inspector John Zdrilic said yesterday police had not arrested anyone over the incident, but he was confident investigators would find their man.
“We will have this solved and wrapped up in a week,” he said.
“Central Hunter detectives are investigating the matter and we have an excellent record with these sorts of matters.”
State Crime Command Robbery and Serious Crime Squad investigators are helping Maitland detectives find the perpetrator.
Inspector Zdrilic said police were reviewing CCTV footage that depicted a vehicle of interest approaching the scene shortly before the robbery took place.
He said investigators had called for witnesses to come forward.
“We have some of the best investigators in the state right here,” he said.
Staff at the nearby Hunter Valley Grammar School contacted police soon after the robbery took place.
A school spokeswoman said police told principal Paul Teys that there was no danger to students, so there was no need to put the school into lockdown.
Police, including the dog squad unit, extensively searched the Green Hills area on Tuesday afternoon after the thief fled the scene on foot.
He was last seen in Stronach Avenue.
The armoured car driver was not injured during the robbery.
The suspect was described as between 25 to 30 years old with tanned skin and wearing a black hooded jacket and sunglasses at the time.
