The planned rail truncation will hit commuters from Maitland and the wider Hunter harder than Newcastle residents, who have other forms of public transport at their disposal or face a shorter drive into the heart of the city.

As far as the Mercury can see, the plan to cut the line will not benefit Maitland residents in any way.

Given corruption revelations involving the government during the ICAC inquiry into illegal political donations, a question mark has been raised over all planning decisions the Coalition made during this term in office.

This includes the decision to cut the rail line and allow development in the Newcastle rail corridor.

The Mercury thinks plans to cut the line should be shelved at least until the ICAC inquiry is complete and its findings released.

We also think commuters from the wider Hunter should be considered more carefully because we will be affected most, although the tyranny of distance has made it difficult for those outside Newcastle to be heard.

A recent rally in Maitland involving more than 200 people who protested against the truncation showed there was a groundswell of discontent in the community about the decision. And that was before the ICAC revelations.

Over the coming days, the Mercury will tell the stories of ordinary people from all walks of life who will be affected by plans to cut Newcastle rail line.
