A good turnout of 208 players competed in the Ambrose Pairs Championships for the East’s Trophy on Saturday.
In Division 1, the formidable pairing of Simon Dillon and Steve Lill put on an exhibition of great golf to record an excellent score of nine under par 62, to take out the scratch award.
In the Division 1 Handicap section, first placegetters were also clear winners with Jeremy Claydon and Aaron Hawkins returning a good score of 56.5, well ahead of Adrian McNabb and Paul Dyson with 61, with John Smith and Bruce Gray hot on their heels on 61.25 in 3rd place.
Division 2 Scratch was almost predictable with the amazingly consistent Graeme Bull pairing with Neil Ingham to return a score of 70 off the stick to take out first place. Graeme, did just enough, in combination with Neil, to also win the 2nd Division Handicap with a score of 58.25, just ahead of the fast finishing pair of Brent Lawrence and Warren Searle with 58.75, and in 3rd place, Mick Buffier and Des O’Hearn with 61.25.
The nearest the pin winners at the 13th were: A-grade Bobby Walker, B-grade Joe Payne and C-grade Max Lantry. Our winners at the 17th were Matt Cook in A-grade, Jim Sheely in B-grade and Chris Motum in C-grade. Balls were awarded to scores down to 66.5, on a count back.
A bright and breezy day greeted our Thursday Medley competitors with Monash visitor Brayden Petersen winning A-grade with 38 points just ahead of Hayden Gulliver in second place with 37 points, with a count back required to drop Brett Lovett back to third place, also on 37 points.
The B-grade competitors obviously enjoyed their day on the course with some outstanding scores recorded. John Smith and Gary Daniels each returned scores of 41 points with John
taking out first place on a count back, with Richard Niznik third on 40 points.
Continuing the good scoring, C-grade was won by Bob Johnson on 39 points, Mark Owen second on 37 points and John Bissett third with 36 points.
Nearest the pin winners were Peter Wyper at the 13th and Howlong visitor Michael Sternbeck at the 17th. Balls were awarded down to 30 points, on a count back.
The Sunday Medley competition was won by Ian Fleming with 35 points and the runner-up was Trent Park with 31 points. The nearest the pin trophy at the 13th went to Roy Dorahy.
