Maitland Christian School was one of 13 schools to receive the Cancer Council grant made possible through the eftpos Giveback program.
The money will be used to establish a new shade structure in the school grounds.
The grants were awarded from a pool of 380 Australian applications and were designed to help protect adolescents’ skin from UV damage during school hours.
“In NSW, more than 3500 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed and over 480 people die from melanoma every year, and traditionally adolescence is a period when Australians put themselves at risk,” Cancer Council Hunter Regional regional manager Shayne Connell said.
“We were thrilled to see so many high schools get behind this initiative and thanks to eftpos, we were able to offer shade grants to 13 NSW high schools, including Maitland Christian School.
“These grants are a great boost for these schools as we head into the warmer months.”
Eftpos made the money available through its Giveback program, which encouraged Australians to support the cause in the lead-up to Christmas last year.
