The movie, William Kelly’s War, concerns a crack marksman serving in Europe during World War I, who returns home to find bushrangers have killed his father and kidnapped his sister.
In an explosive climax, William confronts his father’s killer.
The movie is being promoted by cinema manager Yvette Cavanagh, who is contacting all ex-service people.
“I am hoping RSL members and their families will attend the shows,” she said.
“This would also be a great movie for young people to see at this time of year.
“The movie is a low-budget Australian-made film based on a true story from World War I.
“It would also be a good learning experience for many young people who may not know much about World War I and the problems faced by Australians at home.
“We don’t get this type of movie very often, though people do ask for them.”
Ms Cavanagh has also emailed several Maitland schools with details.
Maitland RSL sub-branch vice-president Fred Goode said the screening over Remembrance Day would also provide an ideal chance for ex-service members to meet young people interested in Australia’s military past.
“I will be seeing representatives from 16 RSL sub-branches this weekend at a district council meeting and I will let them all know about the movie,” Mr Goode said.
“I will tell members of National Service groups about it too.
“If any young people attend, we would be delighted to chat to them and I think this movie would be a good opportunity for our members to relate to young folk at this time of year.”
