“Eighteen months ago we were helping some 400 families; now we are helping 3000 families,” Mr West said. “That must tell you something is happening – or rather not happening – on the jobs front.
“If we don’t look after our working men and women in the Hunter, they won’t be hanging round for ever. People will leave.
“And when the economy turns around there will be no one here to do the work.
Mr West said training people to do other jobs was part of the Thornton-based disaster relief charity’s program.
“Our volunteers are out of work through no fault of their own,” he said.“They are working for the dole and helping us – and in doing so, they are also helping themselves.
“But no matter how well trained people may be, at the end of the day they still need a job.”
