John stole the show on day two, shooting eight birdies on his way to a five-under 66 to give him the outright lead in the boys’ championship heading into day three today.
The Victorian recovered from a shaky start after he bogied his opening two holes.
Kevin Yuan and Queenslander Chris Park remain in a tie for second at six-under along with Thailand’s Sarit Suwannarut.
Maitland’s Hayden Gulliver recovered from his disappointing back nine on Tuesday to card an even par 71.
The 17-year-old is 13 shots back in a tie for 26th.
Maitland’s Will Fraser and Trent Park had 77 and 85 respectively on day two, while Kurri Kurri’s Josh Stig had 80.
Thailand’s Kanyalak Preedasutthijit joined Shelly Shin at the top of the girls’ championship after she shot a five-under 67 on day two.
Preedasutthijit and Concord’s Shin, who broke her own course record on day one, are at eight-under, one shot ahead of Queensland’s Eunice Kim.
In the sub-junior competition at Kurri Kurri, Oatlands Golf Club’s Bradley Doherty has a one stroke lead in the boys’ championship at four-over.
Western Australia’s Cooper Geddes is a shot back, with Avondale’s Christopher Fan at six-over.
Maitland’s Clayton Small, who started the day one shot off the lead, is tied for fifth at 11-over.
Branxton’s Corey Lamb is 16-over for the tournament and outright fifth in the under 13s division.
Hannah Park leads the sub-junior girls’ championship at two-over, five shots clear of Concord’s Doey Choi.
The tournament’s continue today and finishes on Friday.
