When you visit the Hunter District RSPCA you expect the bump of a wet nose against your hand from a skittish kelpie or the raspy licks of a surrendered moggy.

But when I asked the animal attendants to pick out today’s Pet of the Week I didn’t expect to be greeted with the distinguished grey coat and soft eyes of Cleo – the 25-year-old Arab cross mare.
Briony Clarke, one of the handlers at the RSPCA, said it was Cleo’s gentle and relaxed nature that made her a stand-out.
After a visit to her previous owner’s home, an inspector judged Cleo and her foal Harry to be living under neglectful conditions and they were rescued.
Since the RSPCA took in Cleo and Harry, now a year-old gelding, both have been vaccinated, wormed, had their teeth checked, been shod received complete health check ups.
“She’s very easy to handle, rug and shoe because of her beautiful temperament”, Ms Clarke said.
People who wish to meet Cleo at the centre on Burlington Place in Rutherford are urged to visit between 9.30am and 3.30pm on all days except Tuesday and public holidays.
