The Maitland Embroiderers Club has put together a display of almost 300 pieces of their members’ work to mark the special occasion.
The group started with six women in 1987 and now has 180 members, which president Barbara Horn said was a sign that embroidery was a popular skill.
“[The club] is very much alive; it is the companionship people enjoy and the satisfaction of completing their work. They are thrilled that they are able to produce [the works] because they didn’t think they could do it 12 months ago.”
The exhibition will feature three specialist embroiderers who will demonstrate Elizabethan embroidery, three dimensional stump work and Mountmellick styles, as well as several types of member’s work including embroidery on linen, cushions and baskets.
“The ladies are very keen on their linen work and have been preparing it for the exhibition for months,” she said.
Member Bernadette Heagney displays the work she has completed during her 12 years with the group as part of the exhibition.
The group holds a Tuesday, Wednesday and evening session twice a month.
The exhibition will be held at the Therry Centre at East Maitland on Friday, September 7 between 10am and 8pm and on Saturday, September 8, between 10am and 4pm, with the official opening at 7pm on the Friday.
