The talented 12-year-old earned a spot on the state team after finishing third in the senior boys’ long jump at the NSW Primary School Sports Association Championships at Homebush last week.
The Lorn lad produced a leap of 5.04 metres to claim the bronze medal after narrowly missing out on the podium at the same stage last year.
Fairweather, who plays football for the Bolwarra Bushrangers and basketball at Maitland Federation Centre, has now set his sights on breaking his personal best of 5.21m at nationals.
“I want to try and get more explosive,” he said.
“I’m going to work on more speed at the start of my run up.”
Fairweather had won long jump events at school, regional and diocesan levels on the way to the state carnival at Sydney Olympic Park.
He was one of four students from St John the Baptist Primary School in Maitland at the NSW PSSA Championships, with Sam Parkinson and Mercedes McNabb also making finals.
Thornton Public School’s Sophie Sorenson claimed gold in the senior girl’s discus and silver in the shot put and will join Fairweather at nationals.
The Australia-wide competition will be held in Penguin between November 27 and December 1.
