Close to 300 people gathered at The Gardens Greyhound Race Track, Wallsend, on Sunday for the second annual Walk4BrainCancer event to raise money and awareness for the killer disease.
“Our goal was $10,000 so to make more than $20,000 has been amazing,” event co-organiser and former Maitland Mercury journalist Katie Vullo said.
“But it was also very overwhelming to see so many people walking for their loved ones. There are so many stories out there we just don’t know about.”
Mrs Vullo, 30, and Sarah Gallagher, 33, joined forces to stage the event following the deaths of their young husbands (James and Peter) from the most common and malignant form of brain cancer - gliobastoma multiforme.
“Brain cancer is one of the most lethal of all cancers, but is critically under-researched and under-funded,” said Mrs Vullo, who gave birth to daughter Abigail two months after Mr Vullo’s death.
“We need to raise awareness and find more effective treatments for this devastatingly aggressive disease and we need to do it now.”
