Sandra Van der Voort, India Aspinall, Melody Fellows and Jackie Keenan created a video about online shopping to alert their peers to scams and consumer rights.
The video presented their top five tips for online shopping including how to avoid pitfalls, especially when shopping overseas.
“The initiative provided our students with a challenge to be creative, to research and develop a product with a consumer message,” teacher Mason Palmieri said.
“Their video was designed to appeal to their peers, to grab attention and inform.”
The students attended Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum to accept the award, which included $150 each and $500 for their school.
More than 1200 entries were received from 57 schools across NSW.
Maitland High was one of only three state schools listed for awards in the regional NSW category.
“This is a fantastic achievement for the students and the school,” Mr Palmieri said.
“It is the first time we have entered the Money Stuff Challenge and the students are happy with the result.”
The challenge was created to educate young consumers about their rights, and potential pitfalls, and helps teens reflect on important issues.
It is designed to be a fun and educational experience and helps young people develop their consumer and financial literacy.
Young people are a popular marketing target which can leave them vulnerable to scammers and unscrupulous traders, according to NSW Fair Trading.
