In Maitland, a modest timber home cost $10,500. You could buy a loaf of bread for 21 cents and a quart of milk for 19 cents. Sugar set you back 42 cents and a pound of potatoes was 45 cents and pound of tea 30 cents. The average weekly wage was $69.40.
Pictorial editor Cath Bowen has combed through the Mercury’s archives to compile this photo essay of life in Maitland in the year 1970.
Each week Cath will take a trip down memory lane and explore a different time, place or event in our community’s rich history.
From today the Mercury will run a photo gallery online each Friday at www.maitlandmercury.com.au.
