Tickets are available for steam train rides on the Newcastle line during the Lachlan Valley Railway’s double weekend event, which will also pay tribute to Newcastle’s harbour-side terminus in its final months.
The trips are part of Steam on the Newcastle Line running on November 8 and 9 and November 15 and 16.
Two steam locomotives – 3237 and 5917 – will take centre stage along with restored 1930s-era wooden compartment carriages.
Locomotives and carriages are maintained and operated by the volunteer-run Lachlan Valley Railway.
The locomotives will take turns hauling shuttles from Newcastle station this Saturday and Sunday.
The shuttles will be run through the suburbs to Islington before turning off the main line and onto the coal lines.
The trains will travel through the Port Waratah industrial area and around the big loop before returning to Newcastle station after a 90-minute trip.
The shuttles leave Newcastle station at 10am, 11.45am, 1.35pm and 4pm.
Locomotive 3237 will grace the Great Northern Railway when it hauls the Singleton Flyer on its journey through the Hunter Valley to Singleton on Saturday, November 15.
Passengers will alight at Singleton for a two-hour stopover for lunch before heading back to Newcastle.
The Singleton Flyer leaves Newcastle at 11am and arrives back in Newcastle at 4.15pm.
The Singleton Flyer extension will leave Singleton station at 12.50pm, head to Camberwell Loop, and back to Singleton station at 2.05pm.
The Northern Commercial Limited will operate from Newcastle to Sydney on Sunday, November 16.
Locomotives 3237 and 5917 will combine for the trip, which will leave Newcastle station at 9am, arriving back in Newcastle at 7pm.
