Maitland City Council has started construction of a pedestrian refuge in the centre of Chisholm Road, near Maitland Private Hospital.
For more than two years, residents have been calling for measures to make the road safer after a series of near-misses involving pedestrians in the area.
A council spokesman said project, worth $40,000, would be completed in about two weeks.
Changed traffic conditions will be in place until the work is finished, but motorists will not face detours at the site.
“The refuge is being provided in response to requests from residents,” the spokesman said.
“The refuge will provide improved access for those residents on the western side of Chisholm Road to the Maitland Private Hospital and similarly provides improved access for residents on the eastern side of Chisholm Road to Molly Morgan Drive and Green Hills.”
