Maitland City Council is undertaking an investigation on behalf of the three councils into the feasibility of providing the service.
It is a measured step, but given the projected economic constraints facing council it is the right approach.
The investigation, in conjunction with Hunter Resource Recovery, is seeking the most cost-effective service and trying to ensure that any recycling results in real gains for the environment, an increase lifespan for Maitland’s current waste facility and potential commercial uses for waste.
The strategy will hopefully address the major issue of rubbish dumping across Maitland and the Hunter.
Most rubbish dumping has fallen into the category of being an unsightly blight and causing environmental damage to flora, fauna and waterways.
These are obviously major issues, but in some instances potentially harmful waste to the public such as asbestos has also been dumped.
Maitland council has been proactive in dealing with helping the public to dispose of chemicals used in household, farms and businesses.
It also has taken steps to raise awareness of recycling by households ensuring that tonnes of waste has been diverted from landfill.
On-call kerbside rubbish collection will be an important service for people without access to trailers or utes.
Many of our elderly community members fall into this category and have a great deal of pride in their homes and gardens.
Council is moving in the right direction. It is up to the rest of us to use its waste management services and maintain a clean and healthy city.
