Maitland bounced back against visitors Bangalore with a 2-0 victory in the afternoon fixture yesterday after being beaten 3-0 by Macau in the morning.
Maitland are due to meet hosts Lake Macquarie today (12.30pm) in the third and final round fixture, with the winner still a chance to top pool B.
The undefeated Macau face Bangalore at the same time today.
In the other football divisions Pool A leaders Kecskemet meets Sparta today following a 31-0 triumph over Marion yesterday, Upper Hunter and Gosford will be in action in Pool C with only one win between them from the first day. Tralee have been untroubled so far in pool D.
All teams will contest play-offs tomorrow.
In athletics, Thornton’s Lily Cains has qualified for the girls’ long jump final tomorrow after a leap of 5.12 metres placed her fourth at Glendale’s Hunter Sports Centre yesterday.
Cains will tackle the girls’ 100m semi-finals today after running 13.19 seconds in the heats yesterday.
Team Maitland shot put representative Askil Mathias threw 12.31m yesterday to qualify sixth for the final today, when he will also back up for the 100m semi-finals following an 11.78s effort in the preliminary dash.
Maddison Masters (shot put) and Henry Edwards (long jump) didn’t progress past the first round in their respective events yesterday.
Team Maitland marched in the opening ceremony on Sunday with the 1500 athletes from 80 cities and 30 countries who converged on Speers Point Park.
The games, being held in the southern hemisphere for the first time, were kicked off in style despite the rain with Sheppard and Christine Anu among the performers, fireworks and dancing lamingtons.
