Day after day they put their lives on the line to serve and protect people.
After the events of this week’s siege in Sydney, one Maitland community group took it upon themselves to thank police for the work they do.
A bouquet of flowers arrived at Maitland police station on Tuesday morning with a handwritten note.
The note thanked police for their service to the community as well as the heroic work of officers in Sydney.
It was a simple, kind gesture that Central Hunter crime manager Detective Inspector John Zdrilic said did not go unnoticed.
“It was quite touching,” he said.
“I’m very pleased. I go to numerous meetings with various community groups and we often get praised in relation to the job we do.
“This particular group I have no involvement, with but they have taken it upon themselves to the show their appreciation for the job we do.
“Which is always unexpected, but very nice.”
Inspector Zdrilic said it was evidence of his command’s connection with the community.
“You don’t often see things like this,” he said.
“Quite often it’s criticism rather than praise, but it is nice when people acknowledge the good work of NSW police.
“It is a very tough and trying job and we do find ourselves in some very precarious situations, as exampled by what happened in Sydney this week.”
