The region’s four major fireworks spectaculars – Maitland, Newcastle, Port Stephens and Hunter Valley Gardens – will all light up the night sky at 9pm on New Year’s Eve.
In a sign of the times where councils are trying to cut costs, Newcastle and Maitland will not have midnight fireworks this year
Television viewers, however, can watch Sydney’s midnight spectacular on ABC TV.
Pyro technician Fortunato Foti, who has been involved in the Sydney event since 2000, has created a series of new shapes and colours for this year’s event, including silver and gold palm trees.
The fireworks include 11,000 shells, 25,000 shooting comets and over 100,000 individual effects.
It promises to be good viewing.
Here in Maitland, the family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebrations kick-off in the Riverside Car Park at 5.30pm with face painting and balloon sculpting along with amusements such as a giant slide, tea cups, bungee trampoline, rock climbing wall and extreme bounce jumping castle.
Maitland City Council’s events co-ordinator Adam Franks said the kids’ disco starts at 6pm along with plenty of other entertainment including The Do Riders and the Paterson Plukestra.
A new addition to the festivities this year is the giant “In 2015 I will ...” installation where people can write their new year’s resolutions to be put on display in central Maitland during January.
Thank you to Maitland City Council for organising what promises to be a fun night for families.
