I am amazed at the comments on the front cover of the Maitland Mercury on Monday, January 5 regarding “showgirl woe”.

Showgirl is a wonderful platform for our young women to represent the young women of our region.
By entering Maitland Showgirl it is one of the exciting things you will do to promote their city ... the fastest growing area within NSW.
This is not strictly a rural area. We are a diverse region of rural, coal, tourism and associated industries.
The young women who put up their hands to enter this competition are the future of our city, regardless of their background.
In the early day of Showgirl it was for the rural women with a farm background who entered in 1965. We are now in 2015.
But today it is our responsibly to encourage young women from all walks of life to embrace the changes occurring in our community, our country to stand up and be proud of who you are by representing your city, your peers and yourself.
As a past Showgirl co-ordinator and member of the Maitland Show Society for 40 years, we must encourage our future leaders and be proud of every single girl and her achievements.
