Dr Nawrot graduated from university in 1974 and worked as a dentist in London and Berlin for six years.
She began her career at a time when there were few female dentists.
“I had wanted to become a pharmacist, but I changed my mind,” Dr Nawrot said.
Her daughter Genevieve joined her at the practice in Maitland in December.
Genevieve had been working as a dental nurse for several years.
“I love our relationship as a mum and daughter at work together,” Dr Nawrot said.
Her daughter said working with her mum was a bonus.
“I have been working here with mum so long and know everyone,” Genevieve said. “I also love dentistry and being able to help people is a bonus.”
Are people as scared to visit a dentist today as they were years ago?
Dr Nawrot does not think so.
“People are more aware today that by looking after their teeth, they can save them,” Dr Nawrot said.
“In years gone by, many people would only go to the dentist when they were in pain.
“Now they tend to come in regularly.
“I think they are learning that having healthy teeth is like having a car in good running order: it must be checked regularly.
“We try to show people that a visit to a dentist today does not have to be a scary venture.”
