Lodge Wallis Plains No.4, part of the NSW Freemasons, received $13,713 in Community Building Partnership funds last month to carry out work on the historic JW Pender-designed lodge (1883) and the adjoining hall (1927).
The hall is made available to the community for various events.
“The box guttering on the hall has been leaking for a while,” Lodge secretary Bill Lennox said.
“In heavy rain our kitchen floods.”
Some of the money will also help establish one electricity meter for the lodge and hall, which will save Lodge Wallis Plains more than $600 a year in fees.
“This is the second time we’ve been successful in the grants,” Mr Lennox said.
The Lodge previously received $38,000 to fix the building’s lantern, which is a series of windows and vents on the roof that let sunlight and fresh air into the meeting room below.
Lodge Wallis Plains No.4 was the fourth established in NSW and it’s the oldest Freemason lodge outside of Sydney.
The movement began in the UK and its meetings are guided by the Westminster system of formal debate.
Maitland MP Robyn Parker announced the money for the Lodge as one of 12 community groups to share in $300,000.
