The year was 1990 and for many it ignites these very memories, but for Brandy Hill high jumper Nick Moroney it sparked something else.
It was the first time Moroney managed to clear the 2.1 metre mark and not a year has gone by since when he hasn’t repeated the feat.
For a quarter of a century the two-time Commonwealth Games representative has consistently reached the height and this weekend at Glendale’s Hunter Sports Centre he will attempt to continue the streak.
Moroney has the chance to increase the run to 26 years when he lines up for the 70th edition of the NSW Country Championships, an event he has won 16 times alongside 11 state titles and seven national gold medals.
“If you hang around long enough you eventually get a record of some sort,” Moroney said.
“I just really enjoy competing, I’m used to the training and I like keeping in shape.
“I want to keep going for as long as I can.”
The 42-year-old high school maths teacher, who has a personal best of 2.25m, said last year was the most difficult he had faced, with injury taking its toll, but he eventually nailed his target at state relays in November.
“It was certainly the hardest year in terms of getting it [2.1m],” he said.
“I’m not in quite as good a shape now as I was in November, but I’ll just take it year by year and see what happens.”
This summer, Moroney will head to the NSW Country Championships in Glendale
this weekend before having a crack at both the state and national titles.
Moroney, who has reached the 2.1m mark in 72 per cent of his 269 career competitions, will jump on Saturday.
The 2015 NSW Country Championships start on Friday afternoon and will end on Sunday.
Others to contest the carnival include Maitland Senior and Little Athletics Club members Liam Kelly, James Carey and Petra Greaves, Macquarie Hunter’s Stephanie Bain, Woodberry’s David Parsons and Kayley Alsford of Raymond Terrace.
