The annual event, hosted by Maitland City Council, will kick off at 7.30am with a free barbecue breakfast at the park before the official festivities begin.
This year’s Australia Day ambassador, novelist Barry Maitland, will be on hand for the official ceremony at 10am on the main stage as 14 people take the opportunity to become Australian citizens.
The Young Citizen of the Year will be announced from a list of 13 nominees, while 13 outstanding Hunter residents are in the running to be named the Maitland Citizen of the Year.
Meanwhile, the Junior Citizen of the Year nominee, Cassandra Fayers, is expected to be announced as the winner of the category.
Free activities throughout the day will include face painting, trackless train rides, Oakvale Farm animal nursery, novelty races and miniature pony rides.
There will also be free entry into Maitland Aquatic Centre between 9am and 3pm.
Registration for the popular thong-throwing competition will take place at 11am at the aquatic centre, with the contest due to begin at noon.
Musical entertainment from Maitland City Pipes and Drums, Maitland City Brass Band, Maitland City Choir, Middle Sea and the Dave Wells Band will be the soundtrack for the celebrations.
A cool change is expected to blow across the Hunter today, with a top of 23 degrees forecast and showers expected throughout the day.
