The Paterson 18-year-old won both the open and under 19s javelin divisions at Hunter Sports Centre on the weekend and will back up at this Saturday night’s star-lined feature event at the same venue. 

Vane-Wood threw 53.58 metres in taking out the main NSW Country prize on Sunday after launching a 56.37m effort to claim his age group on Saturday.

The talented teenager will now turn his attention to the Hunter Track Classic where he comes up against last year’s Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist Hamish Peacock and former national champion Ben Baker.

Peacock and Baker will be joined by a swag of their Australian teammates from the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

On the men’s side of the draw 200m runners Nicholas Hough, Craig Burns and Alex Hartman will all be in Newcastle this weekend as well as Jeff Risely (1500m), Robbie Crowther (long jump) and Damien Birkinhead (shot put).

In the women’s section Commonwealth Games gold medallist Elanore Patterson (high jump) will have familiar company with the likes of fellow green and gold athletes Brittany McGowan (800m), Madeline Heiner (5000m) and Caitlin Seargent (400m). 

Hale, who won the Australian All Schools 100m title in 10.13 seconds last year, will have a crack at the national long jump record at Glendale on Saturday.

Fearnley will headline the event with the new Wheelies Mile.

The Hunter Track Classic will be the second stop on the Australian Athletics Tour following on from last weekend’s Briggs Classic in Tasmania. 

Community events start at 4pm with main competition from 5.30pm.
