Property developer Stockland finished work on the new Joseph Maxwell VC Park Playground this week.
New turf has been laid and all landscaping and construction work has been finished at the park, on the corner of Champion Crescent and Scenic Drive in Gillieston Heights.
Stockland will officially hand over the park to Maitland City Council for public use.
Construction of the playground was one of the conditions that council placed on Stockland before approving the Darcy’s Peak residential development.
“We’re delighted to deliver another new community asset that we hope the children and parents of Gillieston Heights will enjoy for many years to come,” Stockland residential regional manager Stephen Barlow said.
The Mayor of Maitland, Cr Peter Blackmore, said the playground was an example of how a public-private partnership could benefit the community.
“The new Joseph Maxwell VC Park and playground is another local amenity that will help make Darcy’s Peak a great place to live,” he said.
The park is named after former Gillieston Heights resident Joseph Maxwell who was awarded a Victoria Cross for his bravery on the battlefield during World War I.
Mr Maxwell served at Gallipoli, where he saw fighting at Lone Pine.
He later fought at Pozieres, France, during the middle stages of the 1916 Battle of the Somme.
