More than 60 battery-powered and hand-held tools were stolen from the Landscape Solutions temporary office on High Street.
The shopfront was broken into between 3.30pm on Saturday, March 21 and 5.30am on Monday, March 23.
“We are not sure how they got in, but we think they might have jemmied the door,” Landscape Solutions supervisor Matt Herbert said.
When workers arrived at the site yesterday they realised the tools were missing and called police.
A forensic team attended the scene and an investigation is under way.
Mr Herbert said most of the equipment was from the workers’ personal toolkits and they were yet to find out if they were covered by insurance.
“It’s disheartening,” Mr Herbert said. “This late in the job and we are back to square one.”
He believes people had walked past and noticed the equipment accumulating in the office.
Only tools that could be easily pocketed were taken and most of them were Makita or Milwaukee brand.
Landscape Solutions is in charge of the project in the Maitland CBD and employs contractors including pavers, concreters, electricians and plumbers, who have worked tirelessly since the project started.
